Storybook Waves - Father’s Day Special

What is it?

Storybook Waves enables personnel serving in the Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Royal Fleet Auxiliary to record stories and poems for their families to listen to whilst they are separated.

This year we want to ensure that everyone stays connected and have launched the Father’s Day special.

Who is it for?

  1.  Fathers recording a message/poem for their kids – the children will be sent the recording and  a crafty gift box full of things to make/colour for them to send out to or give their dad on their return. 

  2. Serving person recording a message/poem for their Father – The dad receive the recording and a gift box will be filled with treats to give the dads a break. 

  3. Families recording a message/poem for their Father on board. –The dad will receive the recording and the children will be a sent a crafty gift box full of things to make/colour for them to send out to or give their dad on their return. The Dad on board will NOT receive a gift pack.

 

  • If you are serving you can visit your local pastoral worker, or if on board pop along and see your chaplain.

  • If you are recording for a serving person, your local Pastoral Worker will let you know if they are holding recording events for families, or you can complete the form below and submit your audio as listed.

  • Fill in our Father’s Day log sheet  (the form with an upload option is below)

  • Choose poem, message/memory, or both 

  • Record audio (instructions below). Send it to us for editing, via email or the form below. This will be edited with music only. 

  • Father’s Day Audio will be sent to the serving person on board and a Gift box filled with crafts for the kids will be posted out to the kids at home.

Use something like Voice Memo on Iphones and Voice Recorder on Android 

Tips for a great recording! 

  • Just have fun.  

  • If you stumble or make a mistake, don’t worry, re-read from the beginning of the sentence and our editors can take care of the rest. 

  • If there is a sudden noise, wait for it to pass and go back a few lines. 

  • Try to keep your movement to a minimum  

 

Reading the story 

  • State your name, the name of your serving person and the ship/unit they’re on 

  • State the name of your Poem 

  • Record a personal message for example 

  • Hello Dad, It’s ………….  I hope you are Ok, we miss you. I wanted to I read you this poem…..   

  • Read the poem/tell them a funny story/a memory of them 

  • Record a short goodbye message 

  • That’s all for now Dad, I hope you enjoyed the story/Poem, big hugs. Lots of love …………….. 

  • Once you have finished the recording, state ‘end of recording’. 

 

After you have finished the recording: 

  • Check that your story has recorded and you are happy with it! 

  • You can either fill in the form above and attach the audio or:

  • Ensure it is wav/mp3/mp4 format 

  • Email the recording to yourself 

  • Name the recording with your surname and ship e.g Mitchell HMS SOMERSET 

  • Provide your: full name, your deployment dates (if applicable) your special persons name, postal address, email address for digital file to be sent to person at home and the name of the story.

What’s in the FREE Gift Pack?

Every family will receive a FREE Storybook Waves gift pack containing:

  • A copy of the book recorded

  • An Aggie’s Mini Medal for every child listed on the logsheet (put all your children even if you think they are too old)

  • A Storybook Waves bookmark for every child

  • A copy of Zoe and the Time Rabbit or Henry and the Time Penguin, kindly provided the the Naval Children’s Charity

  • A copy of the Storybook Waves Deployment Journal

  • A Reading Force Scrapbook for every child, kindly provided by Reading Force

  • Localised information for the grownups at home

  • A chapter book for any teenagers that are listed on the logsheet (don’t forget to write them a card to go in the book)

  • A Wisdom journal for any teenagers list on the logsheet, kindly supplied by the Naval Children’s Charity

Please note the story is NOT included in the Free gift pack, every story is sent out via MailBigFile - with a link being sent to the email provided by the serving person at time of recording.
